Feasibility study of a waste incineration facility

There are a number of items that the investor must consider before embarking on their investment into an incineration and/or waste-to-energy project.

The important areas are:

  1. Information on Waste for Disposal
    • Type of Waste (Solid or Liquid Waste)
    • Categories of Waste (Medical, Chemicals, Solvents, Petrochemicals, Petroleum, etc)
    • Typical Waste Characteristics (Calorific Value, Heavy Metals, Halogens, etc)
    • Quantities of Waste
    • Waste Variation
  2. Configurations
    • Location
    • Logistics, waste handling and storage considerations
    • Types of Incinerators (Rotary Kilns, moving grate, static hearth, fluidized bed or plazma systems)
    • Waste-to-energy options (Hot air for dryers, thermal oil, steam and/or Electricity generation)
    • Ancillary Equipment (e.g. waste water treatment plant, washing facilities, etc)
    • Integration with existing Plant (e.g. logistics and storage plans, waste transfers)
    • Others (such as office building, vehicle parking)
      EXAMPLE: Incinerator plant layout
  3. Feasibility of the Project
    • Investment Cost
    • Operating Cost

Investment and operating costs

The main income of an incineration plant is comming from the gate fee. The price is made per tonne for depositing the waste on the plant. A secondary income is generated by the energy recuperation system.

The different costs of an incineration plant are generated by environmental friendly treatement of flue gasses, energy consuption, people, spare parts and technical maintance operations. So, the main costs factors are:

  • Investment costs (technical installation and building)
  • Personnel and management
  • Consumables (gas or diesel, NaHCO3, activated carbon and electricity)
  • Disposals (ash from the combustion chamber, fly ashes, salts, activated carbon)
  • Maintance and spare parts (about 5% of the investment cost)

In attach you may find a blanco excel sheet of a business plan and a block diagram.

The waste truck goes 2x on the balance. Before and after depositing waste on the plant. The difference in weight is the main income of the incineration plant.
